Circular Tourism: A “Common Good” Perspective for Creating Inclusive and Responsible Economic Sustainability
摘要
Circular tourism is a tourism approach which follows circular economic logic. This chapter will explore how and why we need to discuss tourism sustainability from a circular tourism point of view. It begins by identifying four elements of circular tourism—social, cultural, economic, and environmental. The main challenge and opportunity for Indonesia’s tourism and hospitality sector is to develop “green” tourism. “Green” tourism can create sustainable social and economic benefits. This chapter discusses important real-world and methodological challenges that practitioners, academics, and researchers face in creating more inclusive economic growth through sharing and collaborative strategies. Sharing and collaboration can reduce social and economic inequalities because all parties involved have equal opportunities to participate, contribute, and benefit from the tourism and hospitality industry. Designing products with a longer shelf life, emphasizing reuse and recycling, promoting restoration and regeneration of ecosystems, and adopting new and renewable energy sources is a strategy to achieve responsible economic sustainability. By implementing these strategies in tourism and hospitality, a balance will be conducted between economic, social, cultural, and environmental interests in the long term to contribute the sustainable development. This chapter presents a circular tourism perspective to analyze the sustainability of tourism and hospitality in Indonesia. Furthermore, the discussion also emphasized the importance of implementing sharing and collaborative strategies and “green” tourism to achieve inclusive and responsible economic sustainability. Limited resources and data will affect the depth of analysis of this research findings. In addition, future studies might also consider the broader perspective of stakeholders involved in tourism and hospitality to get a more comprehensive picture.
