Access Control-Driven Blockchain-Based Peer Review Platform: An Enhanced Biba Model Approach

The peer review process is the backbone of scientific publishing, ensuring quality assurance and improvement of manuscripts. Presently, peer review relies on centralized systems, where a principal authority oversees the entire process, hence posing issues such as bias, reviewer familiarity with authors, and opaque review status. These persistent challenges highlight the necessity for a secure decentralized system, where blockchain comes into play. However, this amalgamation has its drawbacks due to blockchain’s transparent nature, including review bias from reviewers seeing each other’s reviews and confidentiality breaches from manuscripts being accessible to all reviewers. To address the above challenges, we propose a framework implementing integrity and access control mechanisms on blockchain-enabled double-blind peer-review systems using the enhanced Biba model along with IPFS as an efficient storage solution. Furthermore, our work includes a comprehensive analysis of potential threats and security considerations associated with the proposed framework.
