Rohingya lives are more like a magnetic field about struggles for and against ‘power’ where forces are pulling either way. The coping strategies to endure daily challenges are often associated with resilience—however, a more critical take on these calls for examining emerging agencies. Rohingya are the face of resilience; they also convene resistance, and examples are supporting Rohingya’s agency. Taken together, Rohingya’s engendered lives have become a critical avenue for understanding and framing the Rohingya future. Resilience vis-à-vis Agency: What aids in re-imagining the future, and how do they circumnavigate it? Based on a wide range of interactions accumulated from my fieldwork collaborations with Rohingya in Bangladesh, this chapter describes how they encounter their critical present and look at their blurred future. Based on contemporary news on Rohingya’s resistance and oral history narratives collected during fieldwork, this chapter critically examines the interconnectedness of coping strategies and future and emerging agencies in understanding Rohingya’s political lives. The first step in understanding complexity is to outline resilience, resistance, and agency from the perspective of the Rohingya. The next step brings detailed narratives of how the Rohingya living in the camp (re)imagine their future and strategize their actions accordingly (e.g., movements, social media presence, networking, planning, etc.); intersectionality plays a crucial role in analysing this section. The final section of this work provides a critical examination of Rohingya’s precarious situation—a liminal phase—which sees them stranded between the status of being a displaced individual and the absence of a stable resolution.
