The fifth and final chapter in this section is by Yu Zhenhua, a colleague of Yang Guorong. While Small and Sarafinas describe Yang’s uniqueness in terms of academic philosophy or comparative studies writ large, Yu looks specifically at Yang’s intellectual descent. He was trained in the lineage of Jin Yuelin and Feng Qi, two great modern Chinese philosophers, and his works can be understood against this background. First, Yu details major philosophical developments in China during the last century. He then moves on to an outline of Yang’s major philosophical ideas, all the while placing them within the context of Jin’s and Feng’s theories. A main contribution of Yang’s “concrete metaphysics is that it attempts to grasp the Being of the world in connection with the existence of human beings.” However, “we may detect some elements of this approach in Jin and Feng, and concrete metaphysics represents a creative further development of those incipient ideas.” In this way Yang “blazes new paths” in unfolding the Jin-Feng lineage.
