Stacy A. Trasancos, PhD, a chemist, in her chapter entitled The Role of Catholic Studies in Furthering the Scientific Revolution, draws on Fr. Stanley Jaki’s thesis that modern science depends on the Christian worldview to display a Vatican II paradigm for approaching the Scientific Revolution as an ongoing endeavor for good. In this paradigm, Catholic studies programs bring the Catholic Intellectual Tradition to bear across disciplines to help science renew itself through a rapprochement with philosophy and theology. The chapter argues that the Scientific Revolution is best considered not as a period at the end of the Renaissance when mathematization was applied to natural motion, but as an ever-incomplete human endeavor for good. Pedagogically, the chapter suggests interdisciplinary ways Catholic studies programs can pass on this Christian heritage and work to bring science back around to its unity with philosophy and theology in a mature way that addresses modern concerns.
