Combining the Internet of Things (IoT) with military equipment has revolutionized the way real-time communication is done between various military entities such as soldiers, wearables, weapons, military vehicles, and command and control bases. This has led to the enrichment of the Internet of Military Things (IoMT). The architecture of IoMT includes the interconnection of military objects through which information is sensed and passed to further layers. This survey discusses the evolution of IoMT in the present day by discussing numerous state-of-the-art techniques and technologies employed in the military, including fog computing, blockchain combined with 5G, and digital twin. IoMT can be applied for significant applications like logistic support, keeping track of the health of soldiers, autonomous UAVs, and many more that result in revolutionary impacts. This paper presents forthcoming insights by referring to future trends for researchers to explore various domains and revolutionize the field of IoMT. It has some challenges, which also include security in the military network, which is essential for improving the effectiveness of operations in military defence.
