This chapter reviews the history of whaling, and further introduces recent studies on whaling and whaling culture in archaeology, cultural and social anthropology, as well as in other academic fields. Thereafter, each chapter of the current volume is summarized, and its significance is discussed in the context of the history of whaling research.
