The residential solar penetration in Australia is 36%, as of 2024, owing to the extensive usage of solar panels by the Australian households. Solar energy storage (SES) is a consumer-oriented technology that was developed owing to the speedy growth of residential solar usage. The study explores the factors that affect the adoption of SES in Australia, as it is at the forefront of renewable energy uptake and transition to net zero. The study necessitates the incorporation of various stakeholder perspectives to identify the factors influencing adoption of SES devices. The barriers and drivers that affect the transition towards SES are examined through semi-structured interviews of the key stakeholders in the residential solar and storage industry and energy market. The major barriers are increased location restrictions for battery installations, lack of financial incentives and rebates, lack of policy support, supply chain issues, lack of compatibility, and high cost. The study identifies societal norms, consumption behaviour, increased electricity costs, reduction in feed-in tariff (FiT), relative advantage over the existing technology, and prospects of future technology as the drivers in the adoption of SES devices. The perception of stakeholders was used to identify drivers and barriers that affect the acceptance of SES. The study also concludes that adequate policy interventions are essential to make the SES transition possible.
