Biocontrol Agents in Agriculture: Patent Landscape, Market Dynamics, and Recommendations for Sustainable Farming
摘要
This chapter focuses on three segments of farming biocontrol agents. The first segment deals with the innovation and development of biocontrol agents. It mainly focuses on patent landscape analysis of biocontrol agents. It is observed from Patentscope (Patent database from World Intellectual Property Rights), Google Patents, and Lens.org (Public Patent Knowledge Segment) that more than 6000 patents have been published since 1979. Among them, 1/3rd is granted, and the remaining is abandoned or under scrutiny. Global trends show that the USA is the top country with 2164 patent publications, followed by Canada (693), Australia (518), and India (452). Furthermore, patents are classified based on International Patent Classification (IPC) into two major subgroupsA01N (biopesticides) and C12N (compounds or enzymes from microorganisms for plant growth). The second part deals with the commercialization of biocontrol agents to observe the global commercial status and top players such as Syngetna Participations Ag, Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc., Corteva Agriculture LLC, and many more in it. The final part focuses on the evaluation of biocontrol agents for their potential impact on environmental and public health. This global evaluation will elucidate the merits of biocontrol agents in achieving development goals.
