Nipping is an important agronomic operation in pulses, and oil seeds have multiple advantages. Castor is an important industrial oil seed crop and has numerous uses besides its medicinal value. It has indeterminate growth habit and has an extended growth phase with the availability of moisture. Multi-branching nature stem gives rise to many numbers of primary, secondary, and tertiary branches. Increase in branches per plant no doubt increases the number of spikes but at the same time reduces the seed size and quality. Thus, nipping of internodal branches of castor at nodal buds in the principal branches immediately after appearance of primary spike and in the same for secondary and tertiary branches would be helpful in providing space for better establishment of the spike thereby increasing the yield of castor. Several researchers opined that nipping coupled with nutrition with an appropriate spacing had increased oil yield of castor. Because of effective circulation of air in the plant canopy, reduction in congestion of spikes reduces incidence of diseases like botrytis which is emerging as major problem in castor cultivation. Thus, in this chapter, the authors attempted to discuss the biology, importance of the castor, and adoption of agronomic practice like nipping at the correct stage would be helpful in maintaining a healthy crop with higher yield and income to the farmers.
