Building on the discussion of semantic meaning and analysis, this chapter delves into pragmatic analysis in linguistics and discourse phenomena. It explores coherence and coreference as fundamental elements of pragmatics and discourse essential to NLP. This chapter further examines discourse segmentation and various algorithms for coreference resolution, including Hobbs’ algorithm, centering algorithm, log-linear model, and cutting-edge machine-learning approaches, along with their evaluation methodologies. This chapter also serves as the conceptual foundation for Workshop #5: Sentiment Analysis and Text Classification, presented in Chap. 15 .
