Wastewater Beneficiation Using Algal Biomass

Microalgae provide a sustainable, renewable solution to produce a number of commodity products however, the cost of production is a major hurdle to commercial-scale development. Major factors influencing the production of algae are the cost of nutrients, availability of water and contamination of cultivation systems. Wastewater is a freely available resource which could alleviate some of the nutrient and water requirements for cultivation of algal biomass. This study demonstrated the ability to cultivate algal biomass with increased lipid and carbohydrate yield whilst using wastewater. Reduced sodium nitrate concentration provided similar results to conventional medium. Post-chlorinated wastewater supplemented with 250 mg/L sodium nitrate and 40 mg/L potassium dihydrogen orthophosphate with no other additions was successfully used to cultivate algae in open conditions with no significant decrease as compared to media. The large reduction in the addition of media components significantly improves the feasibility of production of algal biomass.
