Further Steps
摘要
This chapter concludes the book by addressing a number of issues arising from discourse analyses presented in Chapters 2 – 6 —including the complementarity of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Positive Discourse Analysis (PDA), Systemic Functional Linguistics’ model of social context (as register and genre), multilingual education, analysing English texts, analysing other languages and analysing other modalities (e.g. paralanguage, image). In discussing these issues, the chapter presents models for examining texts in their social contexts, as well as a reminder that a study of texts is a study of contexts, which linguistics, like all fields, would like to make an impact in. In this regard, the book closes with a note on appliable linguistics and the dialectic of theory, description and practice that we hope to foster with this volume—as Filipino discourse analysts engage with the challenge of giving people access to a wide range of tools they can use to mean and thereby more successfully pursue their social goals.
