Following on from our introductory chapter, we dedicate three chapters to the discourse analysis tools we are proposing. This chapter is concerned with ideational meaning or the language resources used to construct the goings-on of our world. It uses examples from the children’s picture book story Where did all the fireflies go? (in Filipino Nasaan na ang mga alitaptap?) in order to provide an introduction to action and state clause structure in Filipino. It also discusses Filipino linguistic resources that connect these clauses as texts unfold and outlines the structure of the entities playing a role in action and state clauses. Since the primary text of this chapter focuses on environmental issues, it also models how an analysis of state/action clauses and the entities involved can ground a critical investigation into the inequalities that frame environmental issues today. In addition, using the same analysis of ideational meaning, this chapter discusses ways forward, grounded on hope instead of critique.
