Democracy has globally experienced both its ups and downs, sustained by Samuel Huntington's study suggesting that the fluctuating tendencies in the development of democracy are inevitable. In the Southeast Asian Region, several countries have practiced a long period of democracy (Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia); several other countries however have not fully practiced democracies (Thailand, Singapore), and some remain practicing the royal, junta or authoritarian categories (Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia).
