First of all, it was a great pleasure for me to participate in a discussion on the topic of universities and general education, initiated by the Open Times. China is experiencing rapid economic growth, and at the same time, the number of universities is expanding and growing faster than we could ever imagine. In particular, some new majors are being created in such a hurry that our students are already coming in droves before adequate faculty are in place. What kind of educational philosophy and expertise should we have in order to teach our lovely students? The recent debate on university reform has raised concerns about the philosophy of universities, particularly the philosophy of universities in China.
