In 1960, the sociologist C. Wright Mills visited South America for the first time. At a seminar on the problem of industrial development, he emphasized that underdeveloped countries and regions should find their own way of development. Mills argued that none of the existing patterns of development of Europe and North America could offer an appropriate model for underdeveloped societies to follow, and underdeveloped societies therefore must find their own paths through comparison.
