Existing water efficiency practices directly influence the water consumption in hotels. Green Building Rating Systems (GBRS) provide structures or collections of metrics to determine the water efficiency level that a building can achieve. LEED is the most adaptable system in Sri Lanka among other green rating systems due to its global recognition. LEED-certified hotels are more attractive to hoteliers because of water and energy saving mechanisms and a better environment. However, LEED-certified buildings have been recognised for poor performance than non-certified buildings due to misuse of available conservation systems accredited by the LEED certification. The study aims to compare the water efficiency of LEED certified and non-certified hotels to determine the benefits of LEED certification for water efficiency. Four case studies were conducted, comprising two LEED certified and two non-certified hotels, which are prominent five-star establishments in Sri Lanka. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten participants actively involved in water management within these hotels. This contextual study shows that both hotels use same efficient water fixtures and equipment, while the LEED certified hotels tend to adopt more water efficiency mechanisms like water management plans, water audits, BMS monitoring and awareness programmes. Hence, the water efficiency of the LEED certified hotels was more efficient than the non-certified hotels. Finally, a framework was developed to compare and contrast the water efficiency practices in LEED certified and non-certified hotels. It is useful to hotel industry people to identify the water efficiency practices used in LEED hotels.
