Minimising Waste in Construction Projects: A Focus on Ceramic Tile Waste

Construction waste poses a significant challenge in New Zealand, with the construction industry accounting for over one-third of the waste deposited in the country’s landfills. Addressing this issue requires effective management of waste generated during construction projects. Among the various materials contributing to this waste stream, ceramic tiles stand out due to their fragile nature, susceptible to damage during handling and installation. However, research on minimising ceramic tile waste in construction projects, particularly in New Zealand, remains limited. This chapter aims to fill this gap by investigating current waste management practices related to ceramic tiles. Through a combination of literature review and semi-structured interviews with experienced tilers, site managers, and project coordinators, the study identifies the causes of ceramic tile waste and proposes measures for its minimisation. The research objectives are achieved by categorising these measures into five stages of construction projects: design and documents, material procurement, transportation and handling, and management and onsite operation. By analysing challenges associated with minimising ceramic tile waste, the study provides valuable insights into the New Zealand context. This research contributes to enhancing understanding and implementation strategies for waste minimisation in construction projects, ultimately supporting the industry’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact and achieve sustainability goals.
