Influence of Motion Dynamics on Time Perception and Visual Attention in Automotive Advertising: An Eye Tracking Study

This study aims to explore how high and low movement in automobile advertisements influences viewers’ perception of time pace and their visual behavior. We recruited 30 participants (13 male, 17 female) aged 18–23 (mean age 19.68) and employed eye tracking and biometric signal tracking technologies to measure pupillary dilation, blink rate, and heart rate, along with self-reported engagement. Participants watched a 4.65-min video compilation of four car ads, with questions interspersed. Results revealed that slow-paced videos (1 and 3) induced higher pupil dilation, while faster-paced videos (2 and 4) led to increased blink rates. Certainty in responses progressively rose from slow to fast-paced videos but declined in the fastest-paced video. Heart rates were notably elevated in faster-paced videos, indicating heightened arousal. Participants showed greater attention to fast-paced ads. Our study enhances understanding of how the pacing of automobile advertisements affects viewers’ perception of time and their physiological responses. Despite challenges, it underscores the importance of pacing in advertising effectiveness and calls for continued investigation in this area.
