Eco-Friendly Biobleaching of Lignocellulosic Biomass for Pulp and Paper Industry

Traditional bleaching methods in the paper industry have long posed environmental challenges due to the use of harmful chemicals, like chlorine and its derivatives, which contribute to the formation of persistent and toxic pollutants like dioxins and adsorbable organic halides (AOX). These pollutants, alongside volatile organic compounds (VOCs), cause significant environmental damage and health risks. In response to these issues, there is a growing need for eco-friendly alternatives. Biobleaching, a sustainable solution utilizing microbial enzymes, like laccases and xylanases, offers a promising alternative by reducing the use of chlorine-based chemicals, lowering AOX emissions, and improving pulp brightness. Enzyme-assisted bleaching not only diminishes chemical usage, but also enhances the efficiency of lignin removal, promoting cleaner production practices. Ongoing research into enzyme optimization and microbial sources is essential for advancing biotechnological solutions and fostering the paper industry’s transition towards more sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.
