Ecological Restoration of Salt Marshes by Geomicrobes

Salt marshes are vital coastal ecosystems that offer crucial services, including carbon sequestration, shoreline stabilisation, and habitat provision for diverse species. Nevertheless, these habitats are progressively endangered by human activities and the effects of climate change. Conventional restoration techniques commonly prioritise physical and chemical approaches, which may not comprehensively tackle the fundamental ecological processes. The current chapter examines the novel use of geomicrobes, microorganisms that impact geological and chemical processes, to restore salt marshes in the environment. Geomicrobes can improve the process of nutrient cycling, stimulate the growth of plants, and stabilise sediments. This makes them a valuable and comprehensive method for restoration that is environmentally friendly and can be maintained over time. We thoroughly examine the latest scientific studies on microorganisms in salt marshes, elucidate their potential contributions to ecological restoration, and suggest a comprehensive approach for incorporating these microorganisms in restoration projects. This chapter aims to integrate microbial ecology into restoration practices by focusing on the environmental functions of geomicrobes and their potential to enhance salt marsh restoration. It provides a comprehensive and innovative framework for this purpose. This approach holds the potential to deliver enduring and robust solutions to the challenges salt marsh ecosystems face.
