The increasing industries coupled with sustained population growth and the high demand for hydrocarbons have driven unparalleled economic progress and advancement. Nevertheless, these hydrocarbons have undeniably caused significant environmental challenges in recent decades. It pollutes soil, agricultural lands, and water bodies, which ultimately pose a serious threat to aquatic and marine ecosystems and human health. To mitigate these hazards, it is imperative to address these pollutants before their effects exacerbate. Bioremediation emerges as a sustainable, cost-effective, and efficient solution, employing bacteria, fungi, and algae to degrade complex organic pollutants into simpler compounds. Geomicrobiological approaches offer promising solutions for bioremediation, leveraging the metabolic capabilities of microorganisms to degrade hydrocarbons. This chapter explores the geomicrobiological aspects of bioremediation, elucidating the intricate interactions between microorganisms, hydrocarbons, and the environment.
