Opportunistic fungal pathogens that are responsible for some of the worst invasive infections worldwide have become a major health concern. This scenario is not only due to the high rates of morbidity and mortality but also the lack of adequate drugs to kill these fungal pathogens. Overuse and unregulated use of current drugs are one of the major reasons for the development of strong resistance in these pathogens. With limited therapeutic strategies available with current drugs, the focus is now shifting towards the identification and development of novel fungal vaccines and other immune-therapeutics that could aid in better targeting of these fungal pathogens and also potentially contribute to lower rates of resistance development. Such novel therapies are a result of numerous significant findings from host–pathogen interaction studies. This review will highlight some of the principles and mechanisms associated with immunology-based therapeutics, such as vaccine candidates, cytokines, and cellular therapy. We will also seek to highlight the challenges being encountered in the application of these novel therapeutics and their prospects.
