The first chapter introduces the overall background of my doctoral thesis. Metal clusters and the concept of superatoms are introduced based on the gas-phase studies. Ligand protected clusters are then introduced and conceptualized as structurally defined superatoms. The theoretical principle of anion photoelectron spectroscopy intensively used in the thesis is also introduced. Finally, I remark the aim and the structure of the thesis.
