Experimental Studies and Prediction Models for Drying Shrinkage of Concrete in Natural Conditions

This study investigates the factors influencing concrete shrinkage in Vietnam, underscoring the critical need for an accurate prediction model, particularly in the face of increasing climate change impacts. Unlike materials such as steel and wood, concrete exhibits complex shrinkage behavior that requires thorough examination. Currently, there is no comprehensive database in Vietnam to support accurate predictions. The research focused on analyzing how cement content, water-cement ratio, coarse aggregate ratio, and initial curing time affect shrinkage. Several prediction models, including ACI 209, Bažant B3, CEB MC90, and GL2000, were evaluated against experimental results. Findings indicate that initial curing time plays a more significant role in shrinkage than previously understood. Of the models tested, ACI 209 and GL2000 provided the most accurate predictions, indicating their potential applicability for Vietnam's specific conditions. This study highlights the need for further research to refine these models and develop a comprehensive database.
