This paper explores the current interest of civil society in medicinal plants, emphasizing their role as a source of active ingredients used in medicine. It is noted that many drugs worldwide are based on substances derived from plants or synthetic compounds modeled after plant-based ingredients. There is a return to the use of herbal plant raw materials, especially in health prevention, as an alternative to expensive therapy with synthetic drugs. The development of phytochemistry and pharmacology has provided scientific justification for the use of herbs in medicine, essential for the effectiveness and safety of the therapy. Medicinal plants, long employed in traditional medicine, may find new applications thanks to advancements in scientific research. The need for rational use of medicinal plants based on proper selection and understanding of their biologically active components is described. The benefits associated with plant immunomodulators, especially in the context of immune disorders, are discussed, emphasizing the necessity for their appropriate selection and usage. However, it is emphasized that not all diseases can be treated with plants due to potential side effects and the toxicity of certain compounds. The chapter focuses on presenting current knowledge regarding medicinal plants, their chemical composition, properties, and effects on the human body. It also discusses cultivation, harvesting, conservation, packaging, labeling, storage, recycling, application, and the potential utilization of biotechnological advancements in the field of medicinal plants. Future research directions include: conducting large-scale clinical trials to validate the efficacy and safety of medicinal plants in treating various diseases; investigating the molecular mechanisms of action of plant compounds to better understand how they exert their therapeutic effects; utilizing genetic engineering to enhance the production of active compounds in medicinal plants; Developing and optimizing sustainable cultivation practices to ensure the steady supply of high-quality medicinal plants without depleting natural resources; exploring biotechnological methods for extracting and synthesizing plant compounds more efficiently; conducting studies to assess the environmental impacts of large-scale medicinal plant cultivation and harvesting; identifying and validating new therapeutic uses for traditional medicinal plants through modern scientific research; and investigating the potential for integrating plant-based treatments with conventional medical practices to enhance overall treatment efficacy.
