A significant proportion of the world’s population lives with a disability. Each of these individuals faces significant challenges in accessing oral health care. Disabilities present in varying forms and severity making each individual unique in the manner in which they need to be taken care of. There is evidence to suggest that people with disabilities tend to exhibit a greater treatment need for oral health conditions as compared to the general population. This treatment need is expressed for oral diseases and conditions such as caries, periodontal disease, dental trauma and malocclusion. It is imperative for practitioners to understand that each individual’s situation is unique in terms of the type, number and severity of disability along with their economic and psychological condition. The dental team and care-givers should take into account accessibility and communication issues along with adapting regular treatment paradigms to suit the unique presentation of these people with special healthcare needs.
