Application of MCDM to Sustainable Materials Selection

Material selection is critical to sustainable product design, which is important for minimizing environmental impacts throughout the product’s life cycle. This chapter provides a quantitative decision support tool for the selection of materials in engineering design by constructing an indicator system that incorporates economic, environmental and social criteria to assess the sustainability of materials for product design. Specifically, this chapter illustrates the application of Multi Attributive Decision Making (MADM) approaches, such as Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Gray Relational Analysis, Gray Target Decision Making, Inter-Valued Trapezoidal Intuitionistic Fuzzy Number (IVTIFN), and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) in the selection of pipe materials. These methods include both subjective and objective decision making, and their integration can take into account environmental preferences while considering material performance to emphasize the environmentally friendly nature of material selection.
