Gaming Simulation to Enhance Resilience at the Sharp End of Socio-Technical Systems

In conventional safety training, front-line personnel are trained to follow information in manuals and standard procedures. When information in manuals is not applicable, they are required to ask for instructions from their supervisor or dispatcher. As a result, during unexpected events, workers at the sharp end of socio-technical systems often lose the ability and willingness to make decisions or act in a resilient manner. Resilience at the sharp end is indispensable for systems to function under disturbances and variations from the norm. Those at the sharp end should be both flexible and resilient, especially in the VUCA era as defined by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. The author first outlines the idea of resilience engineering and the concept of Safety-II and proposes the necessity of a new type of training to promote resilient behavior. He then depicts a practical application of gaming simulation to safety training for aircraft crew members.
