The stepping forward of women as a collective in a highly disadvantaged Adivasi area of central Assam concretized as the Dhansiri CLF in 2014. The story of DCLF’s emergence as a community-based financial intermediary in the region is one of persistence. Despite overcoming the fear of debt-based development, the mixed results of the livelihood promotion efforts shifted DCLF’s commitment to augment the livelihoods of its 3200 members through multipronged convergences and linkages. The DCLF has evolved as an organization of collective leadership, which has helped enhance the status of its members in the eyes of their families and society, while some of them emerged as the guiding leaders. These leaders, however, feel the need to widen the scope of their major livelihood generation activities and involve a greater segment of its members under the ambit.
