The Tsunami’s impact occurred in the Indian Ocean in 2004 devastating the island of Sri Lanka, bringing significant and cascading environmental, socio-economic and political impacts. However, it also marked a turning point in disaster management on the island. In the two decades since the Tsunami disaster, Sri Lanka has made significant developments in disaster risk reduction (DRR) and building resilience. This chapter examines the evolution of Sri Lanka’s DRR policies and legislations, elaborating on advancements in preparedness for disasters, community-based resilience and early warning systems programs. Key initiatives such as the establishment of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and the implementation of the “National Policy on Disaster Management” are also highlighted. In addition, the chapter addresses issues and challenges including climate change, resource constraints, and socio-economic inequalities. By assessing both achievements and ongoing obstacles, this chapter presents a comprehensive overview of Sri Lanka’s journey towards a more resilient future.
