Although 80% of tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean, it has always been an impending threat to the countries within the Indian Ocean region. Tsunami risks in coastal communities in Thailand are imminent due to inadequate coastal protection infrastructure, high population density, tourist-dependent economy and social inequalities, as witnessed during the large-scale damage and economic loss caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. In response to the 2004 tsunami, regional early warning systems have been developed to detect and enhance the effectiveness of response and evacuation. However, tsunami risk management entails not only technological advancement in tsunami detection but also a deeper understanding of local contexts and investment in community engagement, disaster preparedness education, evacuation facilities and procedures, land use zoning, livelihood and coastal infrastructure planning. Therefore, the objective of this work is to study the advancements made by Thailand over the past two decades in tsunami risk management and elaborate on success, challenges, and gaps at national, sub-national and particularly community levels. The findings of the study will be helpful in streamlining existing policies and interventions for risk reduction in the local context.
