Surface Water Change Detection over Years Through Modified HSV-Based Color Thresholding

The research introduces a novel approach for finding surface water and detecting its changes through a modified Hue-Saturation-Value (HSV) color thresholding technique. Specifically, this methodology is applied to Landsat 8–9 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) Level 1 satellite data sourced from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Explore repository. In this research work, the cross-correlation-based water bodies detection and color-based thresholding methodologies have been conducted to determine the content of surface water bodies. A systematic examination and comparison between HSV and Red–Green–Blue (RGB) color thresholding methodologies are conducted to ascertain the efficacy of water body identification in satellite-derived imagery. Furthermore, statistical analysis is employed to validate the superiority of the proposed approach over alternative methods. The computational effort is found to be less as compared to the RGB color thresholding method.
