Signature pedagogy is a multifaceted conceptual framework for analysing pedagogical methods and educational programmes that prepare students for particular professions. This introductory chapter presents salient concepts in signature pedagogy that are applied to arts and design professional education in this book. Starting with the institutional context of an Asian Kampong Bauhaus within which this inquiry takes place, it points out extensions to the framework that will be treated in the subsequent chapters, and introduces nine salient themes in professional arts and design education. As the individual chapter authors present their distinctive signature pedagogy for their particular art or design profession, this chapter provides a bird’s-eye view of how the authors have significantly engaged with and extended these concepts and themes, highlighting that the insights are relevant beyond arts and design to other professional disciplines.
