Mangrove ecosystems, with their unique biodiversity and harsh environmental conditions, harbor a distinctive microbiome that has shown promising antimicrobial potential. This chapter explores the antimicrobial properties of microorganisms isolated from various mangrove habitats, emphasizing their potential applications in biomedicine and pharmaceuticals. Through systematic collection and isolation processes, we identified and characterized a variety of bacterial and fungal species. By screening these isolates against a panel of pathogenic microorganisms, including both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi, we evaluated their effectiveness in inhibiting microbial growth. Additionally, this chapter provides insights into the chemical characterization of bioactive compounds produced by these mangrove-derived microorganisms, highlighting key secondary metabolites responsible for antimicrobial activity. We discuss the possible applications of these metabolites as alternative sources of antibiotics, especially in the context of growing antibiotic resistance. This chapter concludes with a discussion on the implications of conserving mangrove ecosystems for bioprospecting and future research directions to explore the potential of these microorganisms in combating infectious diseases. This work contributes to the broader field of marine microbiology by underscoring the significance of mangrove microbiomes as reservoirs of novel antimicrobial agents.
