Microorganisms release biosurfactants, which are surface-active compounds. Biosurfactant materials are environmentally friendly, as they are biodegradable, nontoxic, and eco-friendly. In this chapter, a concise overview of various microbial surfactants derived from mangrove-associated microorganisms is provided. It also covers the various screening methods for biosurfactant-producing microbes, as well as their characterization. This chapter discusses the factors required for biosurfactant production, including carbon sources, nitrogen sources, and other physicochemical factors. Further, it includes the process of media optimization for biosurfactant production. Finally, this chapter provides a brief discussion on the applications of biosurfactants.
