This chapter examines the fragile stability of Israel’s political landscape from 2019 to 2022 followed by a judicial overhaul attempt, the October 7 Hamas attack, and the ensuing Israel-Gaza war. Analyzing the causes and consequences of electoral volatility, shifting coalitions, and challenges to democratic institutions, it explores the factors leading to five national elections in four years, including the brief “change” government and the subsequent right-wing coalition. The chapter investigates signs of democratic backsliding, focusing on eroding institutional trust and attempts to undermine these institutions. Using a 20-year dataset (2003–2023), it analyzes Israelis’ trust in the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, as well as the media. The findings reveal low overall trust in some institutions and politically polarized trust in others, with notable pre-existing polarization regarding the judiciary. The research contributes to understanding the stabilizing and destabilizing forces that shape political polarization, institutional trust, and democratic resilience in Israel.
