This chapter examines the evolving landscape of tourism studies within Indonesia, highlighting the need for a reevaluation of its academic and practical dimensions. As tourism evolves as a multidisciplinary field, it demands an integration of diverse academic disciplines to comprehensively address its complex phenomena. The critique by notable scholars such as Tribe (Ann Tourism Res 35:924–944, 2008) and Coles et al. (Philosophical issues in tourism. Channel View Publications, Bristol, 2009) stresses the fragmented and often incoherent research outputs that have traditionally characterized this field, advocating for a more systematic approach that embraces both theoretical rigor and methodological innovation. By exploring various interdisciplinary and postdisciplinary approaches, this chapter suggests future research directions that not only deepen the understanding of tourism as a scientific discipline but also enhance its practical applications in addressing contemporary challenges. These include the development of sustainable practices and the leveraging of technological advancements to foster economic and cultural sustainability in Indonesian tourism.
