Tourism Village as a Community-Based Wellness Tourism Resource

The ecosystem of tourism economy has shifted since the COVID-19 outbreak. This shift affects the tourism component including the tourism attraction that alters dramatically as the consequence of the emergence of the tourism new economy. Nowadays, tourists are interested in tourism attractions that offer the concept of nature, eco, wellness, and adventure (NEWA). It has become a new mainstream in the tourism industry. Tourism village, as one of the most prominent tourism concepts in Indonesia now, has potential to support the NEWA implementation in tourism especially in the field of wellness. This trend has grown after the COVID-19 outbreak because consumers posit health and wellness as their top priority and preference. The aim of the present study is therefore to investigate the question of what is the mapping of village tourism’s potential and challenges as a community-based wellness tourist resource. This will lead in mapping the potential of tourism villages that can be developed into wellness tourism, particularly in the aspects of body, mind, and soul. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method based on the wellness tourism approach in which the tourism villages’ potentials and problems as resources for the development of wellness tourism in Indonesia will be formulated.
