What Is Yogic Gnosticism? The Spiritual Exercise of Inner Sacrifice
摘要
This chapter addresses the concept of Yogic Gnosticism, focusing on its historical roots and its marginalization in contemporary Yoga Studies. The author critiques the trend in modern yoga culture where physical practices and health benefits overshadow the deeper intellectual and philosophical aspects of traditional yoga, particularly gnostic forms of yogic practice. While physical yoga is emphasized in urban studios and wellness industries, the deeper gnostic yoga, focused on self-sacrifice, knowledge, and renunciation, remains largely overlooked. YogicGnosticism is framed as a spiritual exercise involving the internalization of ancient sacrificial rites. Rather than outward, ritualistic sacrifice, yogic Gnosticism turns inward, seeking a deeper renunciation of the self through intellectual and philosophical practices. In this framework, knowledge (jñāna) and renunciation are twin pillars that support the practitioner's journey toward liberation (mokṣa). The chapter highlights a key feature of yogic Gnosticism: its emphasis on knowledge as the means to overcome ignorance and bondage.
