Napier Grass: A Potential Source of Bioenergy

Fossil fuels, with their non-renewable nature and detrimental environmental impact due to high costs and greenhouse gas emissions, are increasingly discouraged for widespread use. Forecasts suggest that carbon dioxide emissions could surge by 50–250% by 2025 if current trends in fossil fuel exploitation persist. Consequently, the quest for alternatives has intensified, with biofuels emerging as a promising solution owing to their eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and minimal pollution. However, a significant concern arises from the fact that many biofuels, including bioethanol, are primarily derived from food crops such as corn, sugarcane, sugar beet, and wheat. This raises legitimate worries about the potential consequences for global food security and the delicate balance between food production and population needs. Addressing this issue, researchers have turned their attention to Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum), a member of the Poaceae family. Unlike food crops, Napier grass offers a compelling alternative as it yields lignocellulosic biomass, which can be harnessed as a renewable and cost-effective feedstock for biofuel production. By focusing on the bioenergy/biofuel potential of Napier grass, scientists aim to mitigate concerns regarding the impact of biofuel production on food availability while simultaneously exploring more sustainable energy sources. The book chapter aims to explore the attributes of Napier grass that make it a promising source of bioenergy and discuss its potential applications in the context of renewable energy production.
