The preceding sections of this edited book have presented creativity-fostering glocal pedagogies for preschools within the context of East and Southeast Asia, focusing on the art forms of visual arts, drama, music, and dance. Chapters have provided locally situated theoretical justifications for such pedagogies, arguing that they are viable, realistic, and culturally appropriate in preschools within these regions of the world. What are some common characteristics of the pedagogies presented? What makes them viable and applicable in East and Southeast Asian preschools? This chapter will answer these significant questions. In alignment with cultural values and beliefs, and consistent with the societal conceptions of creativity in East and Southeast Asia, the glocal arts pedagogies theorized herein give prominence to the role of the teacher, as a guide that supports children’s artistic exploration and facilitates meaningful discussions in the arts. Preschool teachers are encouraged to enact intentional teaching via guided activities, which are necessary in this context given the rigidity of schedules and the demands and expectations of stakeholders such as parents and principals. Other key characteristics of creativity-fostering glocal pedagogies highlight the importance of: (a) adapting Western methodologies to align with the cultural values, beliefs, norms, and the existing local curriculum frameworks in Asian societies; (b) integrating art learning throughout the curriculum, drawing upon cumulative experiences and community-based learning spaces, to allow children to establish connections with their own cultural heritages; (c) incorporating unique cultural elements and practices; (d) striking a balance between planned instruction and responding to children’s inquiries and interests; and (e) equipping children with knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enhance their artistic capabilities and facilitate their creative self-expression. Drawing on the theoretical framework proposed by Zhang et al. (Asia Pac Educ Rev 2023), we analyze how the four sequential stages of glocalization (namely attraction, decision, implementation, and internalization) can be realized based on the contributions included in this book. We conclude that the book will be helpful to pre- and in-service preschool teachers and childcare practitioners, school leaders, teacher educators, curriculum designers, consultants, professional development providers, and educational researchers in arts and creativity. The insights provided in the various chapters of this book will allow these stakeholders to bring culturally appropriate and feasible innovations in preschool arts education. This endeavor will facilitate the development of young children’s artistic creativity, self-awareness, and cultural subjectivity, enabling them to cultivate a deep understanding of their artistic heritage, aesthetics, and their engagement in creative pursuits.

摘要
