Transformative Power of IoT, AI, and Blockchain in Healthcare: An Overview

As the healthcare industry moved towards a digital infrastructure for collecting, storing, and managing data on patients and health services, it has provided opportunities for efficient patient services and challenges related to data governance, accessibility, and security. This chapter presents the transformative potential of three key technologies to improve healthcare delivery and management. The technologies investigated are the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Blockchain. The chapter begins with the benefits of IoT in healthcare, underscoring how it improves efficiency while empowering patients through telehealth and real-time monitoring of their health. It then investigates AI's groundbreaking applications in disease prevention and management, pharmaceuticals discovery, and enhancing healthcare delivery. The discussion extends on how blockchain will bring much-needed efficiency to various aspects of healthcare systems through enabling interoperability, enhancing security, and facilitating health information exchange. Blockchain technology can transform clinical trials environment through ensuring transparency, which is fundamental to the clinical trials data integrity and effectiveness of medical treatment development. The authors concluded that the three technologies can collectively bolster patient-centric model, augment care coordination and interoperability, enhance healthcare delivery and outcomes, and accelerate medical research.
