Agriculture plays a critical role in India’s economy, with most farmers owning less than 1 hectare of land. The Green Revolution made India self-reliant in food grain production through high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of seeds, improved irrigation, and better use of fertilizers and pesticides. However, challenges remain in making agricultural technology accessible, especially to poor and risk-prone farmers. There has been a shift from a traditional top-down approach in agricultural extension services to people-centred methods, where farmers are partners in the innovation process. Extension services have expanded beyond transferring technology to farmers, now focusing on linking farmers to markets, reducing vulnerability and fostering micro-enterprises. The goal is to improve farm incomes and rural livelihoods by providing technical, managerial and entrepreneurial skills. Agricultural extension services face challenges, such as the need to modernize and address the changing demands of farmers. New approaches emphasize participatory research, the use of ICT and mass media, precision agriculture tools, market-driven approaches and group farming. There is also a focus on including women and youth in agricultural processes. Collaboration between government, private sectors, NGOs and farmers is vital for advancing agricultural development. Overall, extension services must evolve to help farmers become more competitive in a globalized, sustainable agriculture system. They need to expand their role beyond just increasing productivity to improving livelihoods through market integration, financial support and innovative technologies.
