Potential of Halophytes in Greening the Barren Land and Making Use of Waste Lands

The degradation of arable land resources is accelerating globally, driven by climate change factors such as soil salinization and declining water resources. This has heightened the need for strategies to transform coastal zones and degraded lands into productive agricultural areas. Salinity poses a major challenge, significantly reducing plant productivity and driving efforts to develop salt-tolerant crop varieties. One promising and cost-effective approach to rehabilitating degraded land is the use of highly productive halophytes for desalination purposes. Halophytes are plants that naturally thrive in saline environments by employing various mechanisms to either exclude or accumulate salt. These adaptive traits make them ideal candidates for cultivation on saline soils. By focusing on the domestication of halophytic cash crops through conventional breeding programs, we can enhance both their productivity and their ability to tolerate high salt levels. This approach not only helps in repurposing degraded land but also supports the development of sustainable agricultural practices in the face of increasing environmental stressors. In essence, harnessing the potential of halophytes offers a viable solution to mitigate the impacts of soil salinization and ensure the continued availability of productive agricultural land.
