Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are a critical driver of global climate change, posing significant environmental, economic, and social challenges. This chapter explores the multifaceted problems of GHG emissions, including rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, ocean acidification, sea level rise, biodiversity loss, and adverse health impacts. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the current global reality of emissions, highlighting the major sources such as fossil fuel combustion, agriculture, deforestation, and waste—and the uneven geographical distribution of both emissions and climate impacts. While developed nations have historically contributed the most to GHG emissions, emerging economies are now playing an increasing role, although disparities in per capita emissions and climate vulnerabilities persist. In response to these challenges, global efforts like the Paris Agreement aim to limit temperature rise and promote carbon neutrality, yet significant hurdles remain. The chapter examines future perspectives on reducing GHG emissions, including technological innovations such as carbon capture and renewable energy advancements, sustainable practices such as regenerative agriculture and circular economies, and policy mechanisms such as carbon pricing. It also addresses the importance of behavioral changes and international cooperation in ensuring a just transition to a low-carbon future. Despite progress, challenges related to political resistance, economic costs, and equity between nations must be addressed to mitigate the worst effects of climate change and achieve long-term sustainability.
