Indigenous communities have preserved biodiversity-rich ecosystems through centuries-old traditional practices, providing invaluable insights for contemporary conservation efforts. Recognizing and integrating indigenous knowledge into biodiversity management strategies can fortify the resilience and productivity of agricultural systems, safeguarding essential genetic resources for future generations. In tandem, the present chapter sheds light on the pressing issue of undernourishment in India, where 15% of the population is affected by chronic calorie deficiency. Children under the age of five are especially hard hit by poverty; their rates are 15% for wasting, 38.8% for stunted growth, and 5% for death. This worrying lack of resources highlights the fact that a significant fraction of India’s future labor force is born with physical and mental health issues, which could hinder the country’s efforts to become a worldwide power. Furthermore, the chapter emphasizes the pivotal role of indigenous knowledge, highlighting its ability to offer alternatives to Western expertise and provide diverse options for local communities in agriculture. Rather than solely relying on Western technologies, individuals can opt for indigenous knowledge or integrate it with Western technology. Sustainable agriculture and food security emerge as imperative practices for human survival, and the chapter affirms that indigenous knowledge has significantly contributed to promoting these crucial goals by taking a cue from a wider array of research. This chapter emphasizes the urgency of acknowledging and incorporating indigenous wisdom into contemporary strategies to address the interconnected challenges of biodiversity loss, food insecurity, and the well-being of future generations.
