Natural Nanofiller-Based Edible Active Food Packaging

In recent lifestyle developments use of ready-to-eat food products has increased manifolds. As conventional food packaging materials are generated from nonrenewable materials, their harmful role in environmental degradation is very high. Therefore, there is a strong need for unconventional packaging materials in the food packaging industry. This leads to the application of nanostructured materials such as nanofibers and nanofillers along with biopolymers, in food and food packaging. While such materials help in restricting the use of preservatives in food processing and when used in food packaging, they interact with food and provide the status of stored food items to the consumers. Such edible and active food packaging would help in solving many packaged food-related issues. The chapter focuses on the broad overview of edible packaging, the material used in the nanofillers, their application for food packaging, and the effects of nanofillers on the physical, chemical, mechanical, and antimicrobial properties of polymer films for better food packaging development. This chapter also concentrates on the recent research advancements in nanofillers originating from different sources, their challenges for food and food packaging, and their future aspects.
