Nanofillers Based Bio-nanocomposites for Food Packaging FilmsNanofillers are emerging as prominent additives for various applications, one being food packaging. As a substitute for petrochemical-based packaging, the demand is diverting to preservative-free and environment-friendly food packaging; biocomposites are found suitable for the purpose. Biocomposite films are derived from polysaccharides, proteins, gums, plants, microbial origin, and synthetic aliphatic polyesters. The current chapter attempts to present a comprehensive discussion on the utilization of nanofillers directly in packaging materials that avert the use of preservatives in food. The metal/metal oxide (Ag, TiO2, ZnO, Cu, SiO2), inorganic nanostructures, and organic nanomaterials (Chitosan (CS), curcumin, nanocellulose, and essential oil) are extensively discussed in the application. These fillers in biopolymer matrix help to improve functional characteristics, such as mechanical, optical, thermal, rheological, gas, and water vapor barrier properties of biocomposite films. They also provided effective antimicrobial properties against both bacterial and fungal strains. Although nanofillers are conveniently used, the toxicity profiles of fillers are least known. Finally, the issues related to safety concerns about the use of bio-based nanocomposite are also briefly stated. Overall, the chapter discusses the performance of nanofillers in the food packaging application with its current trends and ends with the research opportunities in the field.

摘要
